Coding: Female engineers deleting myth that tech is for men

Zoe Thomas is a software engineer for insurance company Veygo in Cardiff

"I mistakenly thought coding was for men who are good at math."

Zoe Thomas, 29, from Caerphilly, wanted a new challenge but never believed she could work with computers.

After taking evening coding classes, she changed her career from customer service to software engineering at an insurance company.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics shows that women make up 31% of the workforce in the broader tech industry.

However, for software developers, web designers, and data analysts, the number is much lower at just 18%. "I never thought I could do it, but it's honestly the best decision I've ever made," said Zoe.

"Since I studied media, psychology, and English at A-level, I didn't think I'd end up here," explained Zoe, who works for Veygo Insurance in Cardiff.

"I now help make the website work, adding features and fixing any issues that come up, and I really love it."
